How Inelco Hunter Developed the 10.1 Inch Touch Screen Solution Kit
In response to popular demand and inspired by a custom project on which the team had worked. Inelco Hunter designed a 10.1 inch Touch Screen Solution Kit for companies who wanted a larger version of the official 7 inch Raspberry Pi Touch Screen Display.
Another part of the challenge was to improve ease of use and design a kit that was pre-assembled, and ready for a raspberry pi to be mounted to the back of the display.
DevelopmentThe initial custom 10.1 inch design required the display and Touch panel to be obtained from different suppliers, which proved to be costly. Therefore, the hunt began to look for one supplier who would be able to create the design as a standard product.
Fortunately, one of Inelco Hunter’s core suppliers- Powertip- was willing to manufacture the necessary design for Inelco Hunter.
Once the new design was completed, the engineering team at Inelco Hunter then needed to work on how to easily assemble the final kit and ensure that the kit was fully operational with a Raspberry Pi.
The next step was to streamline the 10.1 inch design by reducing the number of wires, sourcing a suitable power supply and finalising the product data sheet. The marketing assets, including the product packaging and promotional materials could also be developed at this stage and the product promoted.
There were several challenges to overcome as development of the 10.1 inch Solution Kit progressed.
1) How to reduce the cost of the kit.
Instead of using multiple suppliers, one supplier had to be found who would be able to make and supply the required design as a standard display, rather than a custom display.
2) How to easily connect the Raspberry Pi to the PCB with a HDMI cable.
The Inelco Hunter engineering team wanted to keep the design compact and free from too many wires. Therefore, they developed a new HDMI connector to connect the Raspberry Pi to the PCB.
Advice for engineers working on similar projects
Ensure that you thoroughly plan your project at the start so you know: the desired final price of the product; amount of time you have to spend on the product; resources that you have.
The next step is to develop a case that can be offered to customers. This will be another challenge in itself since you need to take into account various considerations. For example, the ideal selling price of the case, the case materials, potential tooling costs and engineering time that you want to dedicate to the design of a case.
